Early Gold Rush

Barberton’s story began in the early 1880s, when prospectors discovered gold in the De Kaap Valley. In 1884, Graham Barber and his cousins Fred and Harry found payable gold, and the settlement that grew around the discoveries was named Barberton. News of gold quickly spread, drawing prospectors, fortune seekers and investors from across southern Africa. Bray’s Golden Quarry became the foundation of what developed into Sheba Mine, one of South Africa’s oldest continuously operating gold mines. Today, the historic workings remain a remarkable reminder of the men who followed the gold into the rugged mountains and transformed Barberton from a remote frontier settlement into one of South Africa’s legendary gold-rush towns.
